How I transitioned from Sustainability

to UX Design
As a kid, there was one monthly ritual that I always practiced, which was reorganizing my room furniture. I had always been intrigued by interior design and architecture. After moving to Myanmar in 2012, spending my young adulthood there made me aware of the real environmental challenges in Southeast Asia. In my high school senior year, I learned to care more about our environment and global warming. As I began my college journey in the US in 2018, studying environmental science for two years unlatched another pathway to learning sustainable development and green technology.
Just right before the pandemic, my intern experiences as an energy auditor and a youth ambassador for a public transport agency taught me the most important lesson, the human-centered interaction. Going through the pandemic, I restructured my goals for the future and rerouted my career journey to something that empowers social good and creates positive daily user experiences through technology.
In my junior year, I came across one UX design course at school, which I totally fell in love with. It taught me about empathy and the importance of crafting and designing experiences for people. Also, the fact that UX design cuts across many different fields made UX design more fascinating.
Though working on projects and building my portfolio, I have learned a lot about me, my working style, and my realization of my natural fit into UX. As a 23-year old future UX designer, I am looking forward to creating not only beautiful but also usable designs that benefit social good and stepping into a real UX world soon.
To me, UX design is...
Technical feasibility
Ethical integrity
Business value
Aesthetic creativity Usability
